The Market Commons
Release: 07.03.25
Since 2017, The Market Commons at Pike Place Market has quietly become a lifeline for residents and workers navigating housing, healthcare, food access, and childcare services. "This was here by design," says Velma Chaney (TMC Resource Manager). "The Market is so vast, people didn't know where to turn. We needed something street-facing, where folks could just walk in and be seen.”
The Commons stands out for its adaptability and trust-based approach. “We're low-barrier. We don't keep anyone's information on file, so people feel safe talking to us like human beings," Chaney shares. Rather than offering a static list of resources, the team builds programming based on community input and lived experiences.
Madinah In The Market originally aired as a radio-first editorial series, produced as recorded field pieces inside Pike Place Market. These archived episodes reflect the program’s foundational approach, created before its transition to a multi-platform show.
